Humor

"Humor can act as a social lubricant or a social retardant in the educational setting. It can educate or denigrate, heal or harm, embrace or deface. It's a powerful communication tool, no matter which side is chosen."
"Joy Master vs. Joke Maker vs. Life Mocker vs. Fun Meister
It is crucial for us to identify our humor style--it is such a powerful tool--we need to use it in an empowering manner! Please discuss ways we can utilize this information to make our classrooms, colleagues, and schools better.

  1. I think that it is a little different for me because I work with students in small groups. I know my students really well. Some of my students I have had for 4 years. I know which students I can joke around with and still get work done. I would say that humor does bring me closer to my students. I notice that it makes class more fun, too! I still get the information across to the students and they enjoy it!

  2. I think humor is an important part of any relationship. We use humor when we feel safe and comfortable. I encourage humor in my classroom to let the students know that sometimes life is just funny and needs to be laughed at or with. Humor makes the day more enjoyable and students more receptive to learn. They feel that school is not a live or die situation, but a place where they can grow and try out new ideas and thinking. Some kids can take a joke about what went wrong others can't. For some it is developmental. Humor relies heavily on good language skills and understandings of multiple meanings. Kids that are not developmentally there yet may see a joke as an insult.
I am careful that my humor is not sarcastic, because I know that my humor can lean that way. I always point out to the kids that making fun of someone is not humorus and can be quite hurtful. Humor is a balance of knowing your audience and the individual that may be the subject of the joke.
